A large stone rests after its arduous journey across the Racetrack Playa in Death Valley National Park, as the sun begins to descend toward the horizon.

In a very remote area of Death Valley National Park there is a playa, an ancient dried lake bed, known as The Racetrack. The name is derived from the natural phenomenon known as the “sailing stones”. These mystical stones move across the playa as a result of a perfect balance of ice, water and wind, leaving behind remarkable trails showing the path of their movement. On this calm evening in the spring of 2025, the amazing image of The Racetrack was masterfully photographed by southwest photographer Todd Stapleton as the sun was nearing the horizon, capturing this one solitary moment to be preserved and cherished for a lifetime.
