For nearly a century, the movement of these stones was an enduring mystery, sparking theories that ranged from unusual magnetic fields to extraterrestrial involvement. However, in 2014, scientists were finally able to observe and document the phenomenon directly using GPS trackers and time-lapse cameras. Based on those observations, they concluded that the rocks move when thin, wind-driven sheets of ice form and push them across the wet, slippery desert floor, creating trails that can extend for hundreds of meters. It is a remarkable natural occurrence, truly majestic to behold, though reaching the site requires a long and often treacherous drive through the harsh desert of Death Valley.
