The sand dunes of Death Valley National Park are astounding works of natural art. The shapes of the different dunes are constantly changing over the years due to the continual reshaping by wind and weather. When you add the fact that the sun’s position in the sky shifts with the seasons, you begin to realize that no two moments are ever exactly the same in this landscape. As the sun’s angle varies, changing patterns of light and subtle curves of shadow are produced. On this particular spring morning in 2025, the direct light of the rising sun created a gorgeous scene of warm golden hues and stark, dramatic shadows. This stunning image was photographed by southwest photographer Todd Stapleton, capturing this unique and dramatic moment to be preserved and cherished for a lifetime.
