This overlook in southcentral Utah is one of the most incredible viewpoints in all of the American Southwest. The badlands in the canyon below are naturally sculpted like a work of fine art, with ridges and gullies carved by time and weather into intricate forms. At sunrise these colors ignite the landscape, bathing rock and sky in warm hues and creating a surreal, almost painterly experience as the sun slowly makes its way above the horizon. Southwest photographer Todd Stapleton masterfully captured this scene at precisely the right moment, blending blue hour’s cool tones with the first golden light to create an image meant to be preserved, admired, and cherished for generations.
