Shiprock is truly one of the iconic scenes in all of the desert southwest. It is a magnificent geological structure with a stunning landscape surrounding its base, rising out of the plain with an almost otherworldly presence. In the heat of the summer monsoons, the clouds diffuse the light of the sunset and paint the canvas of the sky in a myriad of rich, shifting color. On this particular evening in July of 2023, the skies were on fire with deep color and surreal light, bathing the rock and surrounding terrain in an unforgettable, luminous glow. This moment was masterfully captured by southwest photographer Todd Stapleton to preserve and cherish for generations.
