The landscape of this remote section of New Mexico’s badlands is littered, as far as the eye can see, with the shattered remnants of ancient rock formations, weathered into a garden of rocks by countless seasons of wind and sun.

The otherworldly landscapes found within the badlands of northwestern New Mexico are uniquely beautiful and geologically remarkable. This particular section, buried deep within the badlands, is strewn with what looks like a literal garden of rocks. These stones are likely the remnants of ancient stone formations and hoodoos that weathered and weakened over millions of years, eventually collapsing into smaller fragments and scattering across the terrain. On this warm summer evening, the sunset produced a dramatic pink sky that provided the perfect backdrop to this magnificent scene. This moment was masterfully captured by southwest photographer Todd Stapleton to be admired and cherished for generations to come.
