Shiprock, located in northwestern New Mexico, is the remnant of an explosive volcanic eruption that occurred around 30 million years ago. Its iconic, jagged form is the most dominant feature of the northwestern landscapes of New Mexico, rising nearly 1,583 feet above the high-desert plain of the Navajo Nation. On this day in the summer of 2023, a storm was moving in, bringing dramatic clouds and shifting light to an already magnificent scene. This dynamic moment was masterfully captured from the air by southwest photographer Todd Stapleton, preserved as a striking image to cherish for generations.
