The Bisti/De-Na-Zin Wilderness is a slow-developing landscape, not a series of quick sights. Formed in the Late Cretaceous near a shallow sea, layers of sandstone, shale, coal, and ash record ancient floodplains, swamps, and meandering rivers. Uplift and cracking, followed by long-term wind and water erosion, gradually carved the land into the shapes we see today. What looks chaotic at a glance is actually steady erosion, differing rock strength, and immense time working together to create one of the most uniquely striking landscapes on the planet. On this particular day, a storm was moving in creating an intense and unique color against these amazing structures. This dramatic image was taken in the summer of 2023 by Southwest photographer Todd Stapleton, who captured this unique moment to be preserved and cherished for a lifetime.
