Deep in the heart of White Sands National Park, among the white gyspum sand dunes, lie extraordinary patterns in the sand. Since the park is situated in a basin and mostly surrounded by mountains, wind direction constantly shifts providing stunning results in the patterns of the dunes. Deep in the backcountry, beyond the footprints left by humans, the undisturbed dunes provide extraordinary opportunity to create striking compositions. This dramatic image was taken in the summer of 2023 by Southwest photographer Todd Stapleton, who captured this unique moment to be preserved and cherished for a lifetime.
